Daniel 03:21
Now I wonder ‘bout your house Where it is that you call home And all the places you have been and gone And the people you have known I still think of you in the dark In this endless waking night As the hours, go spinning out Are you out there on the road? Or in a town that knows your name? Or on a stool beside a bar with a whiskey and a flame? Chasing words around your mind Threading notes onto a line As the hours, go spinning out Daniel you’ll be in my heart And you’ll be on my mind And it’s taken time, oh to realise That it won’t be you But you showed me truth And that’s the love, I hope to find. Now you’re out across the ocean In a town I’ll never see And all I’m left with are the lingering and faded memories Of a night you held me close And it was only you and me As the hours Went spinning out Daniel you’ll be in my heart And you’ll be on my mind And it’s taken time, oh to realise That it won’t be you But you showed me truth And that’s the love, I hope to find.

Free to Roam 02:56
My mind is free to wander And my heart is free to roam And everyone is finding love here And everyone is settling down But I’m out on my own here Still trying to find a home I’m still searching for a place to call my own And my heart has known the sweetness of a love that brought me peace And my heart has known the bitterness of a lover lost to sea But I’m out on my own here Still trying to find a home I’m still searching for a place to call my own I’m caught between the freedom and a heart to anchor me Between a road to home and a road of endless possibilities I’m caught between the tide that leads to shore or out to sea Won’t you come and find me Please come and find me And if I find you, I won’t let you go I would give my heart, give you all I know And the road ahead will be ours to roam And with you I’d find a place to call my home

Out West 03:09
It was in summer that we met, I sang of home, you stole a kiss And your heart was warm your smile outshone the rest In the morning got the train, you said one day we’ll meet again Oh, my guitar-playing cowboy out West Crossed the ocean in the Fall, stopped by the town that you call home Came to the bar where you were playing with the band I only came to say hello, not thinking you’d invite me home But one night was all the time that we had left You told me that you’d met the girl that you want to make your wife So why is it that you ask me to stay? Why’d you hold my hand in yours like you won’t ever let it go Is it love or is it me you’re looking for? And when you kissed me, I could taste the whiskey on your lips You said you want me, and you won’t have no regrets But we’ve been right here behind an open, waiting door You had me once and then you got right up and left So go back to the girl, the one you want to make your wife And there’s no ocean between you to cross So, I will think of you a while, wish you the best and say farewell Oh, my guitar-playing cowboy out West

The night we met is still clear in my mind I walked in and smiled, as you caught my eye Wanted to talk to you, and ask of you your name But I was shy and couldn’t find the words to say Couldn’t find the words to say Before I knew it, you’d packed up and you were gone Until next night when you returned to sing your songs The lights go down, I’m standing here and there you are You said, come over here and talk with me a while Come and talk with me a while And ours was quite the story to tell I remember it, remember you so well Oh, and ours was quite the story to tell I remember it, remember you so well A few weeks later and I came to say goodbye And through the crowd you saw me standing there and smiled And that night when all the lights and sounds were gone We talked for hours and I lay sleeping in your arms I lay sleeping in your arms Now it’s been years, I still think of you sometimes And wonder if I have remembered it all right And if you’ve thought of me at all down these years If I imagined you or if it’s something real Or if it was something real And ours was quite the story to tell I remember it, remember you so well. And ours was quite the story to tell I remember it, remember you so well.

Disarm Me 04:12
Now you came and you found me When nobody else had noticed I’d gone Or if I’d been there at all with the noise and the crowds that surround me Drowning me out, flooding the gates to my door I’d gotten used to the way things were, that’s how I made them In a safe house, I had taken so long to build And I’d grown comfortable with the stillness that surrounds me But sometimes I long, for someone to join me aboard Now you’re here take me in and disarm me One little piece at a time, please take it slow Coz it’s been a while since I let me guard down and it scares me But I want you to see me, laid bare before you, oh, oo In the light of the sparks from the fire that you laid in the darkness, I see a smile, flicker and dance ‘cross your face And know that you see me through all of the noise of the crowd that surrounds us I feel the comfort I had been missing in your embrace Now you’re here take me in and disarm me One little piece at a time, please take it slow Coz it’s been a while since I let me guard down and it scares me But I want you to see me, laid bare before you, oh, oo

Spin It Out 04:25
Out here it’s quiet, I can see the stars at night Hear the whistle of the wind around my door And the seasons they have carried me Through winter into springtime And I see them in a new way than before We came up here today For a moment swept away And time stood still when I was in your arms You stole my heart today There’s not a thing that I would change Except to hold this for a moment, spin it out Head down to the city streets, the sounds they echo round me I looked over saw you standing at the bar There was music, there was laughter And we sat and talked the night through As the minutes and the hours went playing out We came up here today For a moment swept away And time stood still when I was in your arms You stole my heart today There’s not a thing that I would change Except to hold this for a moment, spin it out I want to steal you away, shut the world out for a day All the chatter and the noise, let’s drown it out You bring the film, I’ll pour the wine We’ll sit with legs and arms entwined Tell me stories of the days that came before We came up here today For a moment swept away And time stood still when I was in your arms You stole my heart today There’s not a thing that I would change Except to hold this for a moment, spin it out Except to hold this for a moment, spin it out Except to hold this for a moment and spin it out

This Is Love 04:02
You’re here at my door so come in from the cold Take your jacket and leave it downstairs Come lay with me close, let me hold you tonight And I’ll kiss away all of your fears You can talk if you want to and not if you don’t Though it’s dark, let me show you a light In my arms you have nothing to fear Feel my love This is love I came to your room, you looked almost like you But so small in your hospital bed Took your soft hand in mind, and I told you just know That everything’s going to be fine Then you asked for a song to take your mind out this place And I sang to you Fields of Gold In my arms you have nothing to fear Feel my love This is love I can’t take this away, but I promise to stay In your arms as long as you like And when words aren’t enough, I will show you my love In the way that I hold you You can talk if you want to and not if you don’t Though it’s dark, let me show you a light In my arms you have nothing to fear Feel my love And this is love This is love This is love
9.
I remember holding you from the very start A miracle and wonder when you came into the world I had waited for you and I’d wanted you so long And you were more beautiful than anything and anyone I’d ever known And down the years you grew and there were times we spent apart And I was always thinking of you carried you with me inside my heart And you wrote me letters, told me stories of your days The laughter, loving, talking, joining and the parting of ways And you’re comfort, love and inspiration, oh And you’re beautiful in your heart and in your soul And you know the time will pass and seasons they will change Would you always stay the same? Would you always stay the same? Briony Through the years I’ve loved you with a heart so strong and true And hope you know there’s nothing on the earth I wouldn’t do for you And every day I thank you for the person that you are And know that I am here and will be always, whether near or I am far And you’re comfort, love and inspiration, oh And you’re beautiful in your heart and in your soul And you know the time will pass and seasons they will change Would you always stay the same? Would you always stay the same? And in my darkest hours you brought me to the light And in your company, I believe that everything will turn out right And you’re comfort, love and inspiration, oh And you’re beautiful in your heart and in your soul And you know the time will pass and seasons they will change Would you always stay the same? Would you always stay the same? And you’re comfort, love and inspiration, oh And you’re beautiful in your heart and in your soul And you know the time will pass and seasons they will change Would you always stay the same? Would you always stay the same? Briony

Now the seasons are changing and life’s rearranging There’s a shift in the place that we know And those stories those four walls could you tell you From the first chapter a lifetime ago But wherever you are, when you open the door This is home And wherever you are when you open the door This is home Home is wherever you are And all beautiful things have their place and their time And it’s good to know when to let go Let the storybook keep on unfolding Keep turning the pages, just want you to know That wherever you are, when you open the door This is home And wherever you are when you open the door This is home Home is wherever you are In a place half forgotten, you brought love and made it a home I know it’s hard to let go but it’s sometimes in the leaving That you make space For new roots to grow, to grow And wherever you are, when you open the door This is home And wherever you are when you open the door This is home Home is wherever you are And wherever you are, when you open the door This is home And wherever you are when you open the door This is home Home is wherever you are

about

Free to Roam is the debut album from Emily Davies. It is an album which tries to understand what freedom means in all its complexity. Drawing on the stripped-back warmth and intimacy of Carole King and blending the folk sensibilities of early Laura Marling with the close harmonies of The Staves, the record explores who we were, who we are and where we are going. The songs weave tales of hearts won and lost, of the family ties that bind and the dance between the lure of the open road and an ache for a sense of rootedness and belonging.

Melodic finger-picked guitar and warm, resonant piano are textured with harmonica, violin, synths and harmonium, creating a subtle and atmospheric backdrop for the vocals which are soothing, yet also display a delicate vulnerability.
